A nickel and dime pioneer went broke. That’s not good news
Spirit Airlines ceased operations this month after filing for bankruptcy, the second time the budget carrier shut down. The airline pioneered the "nickel and dime" model in the early 2000s, charging separately for seats, baggage, and water. However, major carriers adopted similar practices, eliminating Spirit's competitive advantage as fuel costs mounted.
