WA once had its own species of koala. Then the forests collapsed
Western Australia once had its own koala species with distinctive facial dimples that vanished about 28,000 years ago when eucalypt forests collapsed. Researchers identified Phascolarctos sulcomaxilliaris from two skulls at the WA Museum, noting deep cheekbone grooves absent in modern koalas. The extinct species had smaller brains, thinner bones, and wider teeth than contemporary koalas.
