Interest-only loans hit eight-year high fuelled by property investors
Interest-only home loans in Australia hit an eight-year high of 21.2 percent in December 2025, driven primarily by property investors seeking tax advantages. Investors now represent 40.3 percent of home lending value, up from 27.9 percent six years ago. Federal budget changes to negative gearing are expected to cool investor activity and moderate the share of interest-only loans going forward.
