Mayor to make Japanese history by going on maternity leave
Shoko Kawata will become Japan's first incumbent mayor to take maternity leave while in office, starting in September when she gives birth. The 35-year-old mayor of Yawata, Kyoto Prefecture, will take six weeks before birth and eight weeks after, appointing a deputy mayor to manage her duties.
