RCA and NBC launched commercial television in the United States on April 30, 1939, at the New York World's Fair in Queens, broadcasting three and a half hours live from the sprawling site. NBC's first regular television schedule was transmitted from an antenna atop the Empire State Building, reaching approximately 55 miles in all directions from Midtown Manhattan.
