Australian doctor renames polycystic ovary syndrome to improve diagnosis and treatment
Australian endocrinologist Helena Teede announced Tuesday that polycystic ovary syndrome has been renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS). The condition affects one in eight women globally, causing irregular periods, unwanted hair growth and weight gain. Research shows most women with PMOS lack the ovarian cysts the old name suggested, causing widespread misdiagnosis and inadequate treatment.
