Leaving Australia is about to get more expensive after budget change

Australia's government raised the Passenger Movement Charge to $80 per departing traveler from $70, effective January 1, 2027. The airport lobby criticized the increase, saying it pressures cost-conscious travelers during a cost-of-living crisis and risks damaging tourism competitiveness. The fee, originally introduced in 1978 for border processing costs, has become a general revenue-raising measure.
