The 25-year ocean mystery solved with a nod to Mr Snuffleupagus
Fish scientist David Harasti spotted an unusual creature off Papua New Guinea in 2002 and spent 20 years searching for it. He finally collected specimens from Australia's Great Barrier Reef in 2020 and formally identified the hairy ghost pipefish this week. The tiny, ultra-rare species was named Solenostomus snuffleupagus after Sesame Street's elusive Mr. Snuffleupagus character.
