Out of the flames: communities give thanks
Victorian volunteers have responded to many devastating and deadly fires over the years, but the brutal heatwave of early 2026 provided some especially challenging conditions. From mid-February, more than 435,000 hectares of land had burned and 26 total fire bans had been declared, compared with 12 during the previous season.
