Melbourne’s ‘palace’ throws open doors to mark 125 years of history
The Royal Exhibition Building, which hosted Australia's first federal parliament in 1901, opens to the public this weekend for 125 years of history celebrations. Museums Victoria displays Charles Nuttall's monumental four-metre painting "The Opening, Commonwealth Parliament" for the first time in 25 years, retrieved from storage after decades of neglect. The building itself narrowly escaped demolition in the 1950s.
