Albanese government abandons beleaguered inland rail project connecting NSW with Queensland
Australia's government abandoned plans to extend the inland rail project to Queensland, scaling back the 1,700km Melbourne-Brisbane line to just Beveridge-to-Parkes in NSW. The project's cost ballooned to over $45 billion, more than doubling initial estimates, prompting the government to reallocate $1.75 billion to other rail upgrades. Construction between Parkes and Beveridge is now expected by late 2027.
