Endocrinologist renames polycystic ovary syndrome recognizing broader hormonal disorder
Australian endocrinologist Helena Teede announced Tuesday that polycystic ovary syndrome will be renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome, or PMOS. The condition affects one in eight women globally, causing irregular periods, excess hair growth, and weight gain. The name change follows 14 years of research and recognizes PMOS as a broader hormonal imbalance affecting multiple organs, not primarily an ovarian issue.
