Australia's champion oyster Jill dies after festival victory and heavy handling
Bernie Connell's champion oyster Jill, Australia's biggest at 3.01 kilograms, died weeks after winning the Narooma Oyster Festival for the second time. The retired farmer blamed heavy handling during post-competition celebrations and freshwater flooding on his Clyde River farm. Though heavier than Guinness World Records' Danish titleholder, Jill lacked the length required for global recognition.
