Woman guilty of killing stepdaughter, five, by scalding almost 50 years ago
Janis Nix, 67, was convicted Tuesday of manslaughter in the 1978 scalding death of her five-year-old stepdaughter Andrea Bernard in south London. Her brother Desmond Bernard, now 56, told police in 2022 that Nix held Andrea in a scalding bath as punishment after the girl left the house. Bernard had initially claimed the death was accidental, fearing further beatings.
