The press, the PMs and the high times and hijinks of parliament
Australia's federal press gallery, which began in 1901 with 30 journalists at Parliament House in Melbourne, now has over 250 members in Canberra. The iconic Non-Members Bar, where politicians and reporters historically leaked stories and caroused together, closed in the mid-1990s. Female journalists, once countable on one hand in the 1970s, now comprise half the gallery's membership.
